We are seeking to gauge whether there is enough interest to get this Group started. Please enter the Members Portal and apply to join the new Group (XGE). At this stage "Joining" is simply expressing an interest. We will consult among those expressing interest on meeting days and content matter. If you are not yet a u3a member please contact the Group Coordinator through the link above.
The internet has made Family History research much more accessible to everyone and inevitably the course will be making use of websites, without forgetting that a lot of information has yet to be digitalised and is available only by visiting the repository.
Aside from individual family histories, we plan to look at the social history of the times our ancestors lived in.
Possible 6 session topics, though we are open to suggestions.
- Getting started. Record keeping / Free BMD and paid sites.
- Census returns / Illegitimates
- World Wars and the 1939 Register.
- Parish Registers
- Omissions, misdirection and lies. / The workhouse.
- Wills / Newspapers / Migration.
We are enormously indebted to Woking u3a who have very kindly offered to send us some course notes and perhaps PowerPoint presentations built up over 9 years of running an introductory course.
